Transitivity Marking in Light Warlpiri, an Australian Mixed Language
نویسندگان
چکیده
Light Warlpiri is a newly emerged Australian mixed language that systematically combines nominal structure from (Australian, Pama-Nyungan) with verbal Kriol (an English-lexified Creole) and English, additional innovations in the auxiliary system. Lexical items are drawn both two sources, English. The verb system interesting because of questions raised about how it elements its sources. Most stems derived or but also occur, reanalysis, either source host Kriol-derived transitive marking (e.g., hit-im ‘hit-TR’). Transitive productive variable. In this paper, we examine transitivity on verbs, drawing narrative data an extensive corpus adult speech. study finds verbs conditioned by six Hopper Thompson’s semantic components transitivity, as well morphosyntactic constraint.

Parsing a Free-Word Order Language: Warlpiri
Free-word order languages have long posed significant problems for s tandard parsing algorithms. This paper reports on an implemented parser, based on GovernmentBinding theory (GB) (Chomsky, 1981, 1982), for a particular free-word order language, Warlpiri, an aboriginal language of central Australia. The parser is explicitly designed to t ransparent ly mirror the principles of GB. The operation...
متن کاملCompetition between word order and case-marking in interpreting grammatical relations: a case study in multilingual acquisition.
The study examines strategies multilingual children use to interpret grammatical relations, focusing on their two primary languages, Lajamanu Warlpiri and Light Warlpiri. Both languages use mixed systems for indicating grammatical relations. In both languages ergative-absolutive case-marking indicates core arguments, but to different extents in each language. In Lajamanu Warlpiri, pronominal cl...
متن کاملQuantification in Warlpiri
In this chapter, I provide a descriptive overview of quantification in Warlpiri, a Pama-Nyungan language spoken by approximately 3,000 people in central Australia. Warlpiri’s quantificational system is of particular interest due to the fact that a number of Warlpiri A-quantifiers are interpreted as taking nominal scope; that is, as Dquantifiers. Conversely, a number of Warlpiri D-quantifiers ar...
متن کاملPhonetically prestopped laterals in Australian languages: a preliminary investigation of Warlpiri
Phonologically prestopped nasals occur primarily in central and southern Australian languages. Phonetically prestopped nasals on the other hand, occur in a large number of Australian languages and are not isolated to one particular region. Phonetically prestopped nasals have been analysed as a preservation of spectral characteristics at vowel-sonorant boundaries in languages which have a compar...
